The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is looking into reports that the anti-smoking drug Chantix may trigger mood swings and thoughts of suicide in patients taking it.
Information provided to the agency by Chantix manufacturer, Pfizer Inc. cited "erratic behavior" in an individual who had used Chantix. The agency is also investigating the death of the person who used the drug, but was also under the influence of alcohol.
The FDA has asked Pfizer for any additional information it has on reports of adverse reactions in people taking the drug. Its Center for Drug Evaluation and Research is analyzing the data and plans to release its findings to the public once the analysis is completed.
In the meantime, the agency recommends that health care providers monitor patients taking Chantix. Patients taking Chantix should contact their doctors if they experience behavior or mood changes, the FDA said.
The FDA also advises that patients taking Chantix use caution when driving or operating machinery due to reports of drowsiness.

Ultimately, I don't think this is going to pan out. I don't think that Chantix causes suicide. However, in the short term I forsee further declines in Pfizer's stock price. Currently, it's just above its 52 week low. I think Pfizer will be a good buy at around 20, and recommend waiting until then to buy Pfizer.

Its possible that Chantix causes extreme agitation in some people. Here in Dallas a musician with no history of violent behavior was taking Chantix and was shot and killed by a homeowner after the musician beat violently on the homeowner's door one evening. Family and friends have said this behavior was atypical for the musician. The issue of this type of side effect really should be addressed.
I tried to kill myself three weeks ago 4 days after starting chantix, a friends mom tried to kill herself today and started it a week ago. There is no doubt in my mind that this drug increases suicidal thoughts and actions. I have never done such a thing before.

I just pulled the following from pfizer's website for Chantix - notice "frequent" for anxiety, irritability and restlessness:
PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS.Frequent: Anxiety, Depression, Emotional disorder, Irritability, Restlessness. Infrequent: Aggression, Agitation, Disorientation, Dissociation, Libido decreased, Mood swings, Thinking abnormal. Rare: Bradyphrenia, Euphoric mood, Hallucination, Psychotic disorder, Suicidal ideation.
I started chantix in october. In November I tried to commit suicide but was saved by a co-worker. I have no history of mental problems and use no prescription meds. I have quit smoking twice in my 35 year habit using nicotine gum and the patch without any problems. This is a very powerful drug.

My mother was taking chantix and was suffering from mental illness before taking the drug. She committed suicide in November. We think it may have been linked to the medication.
I took chantix for the full 12 weeks and i guit, I never thought about killing myself, I just had some REAL massed up dreams from it. My husband took it for 4 weeks and he would get sick in the mornings after taking it but that was all. Oh, and he guit to.
The main doses of chantix medication are 0.5mg and 1mg tablets. At the start of the treatment, you need to take the lower dose and then increase it after few weeks. The recommended dose of chantix should be swallowed as a whole with a glass of water. The treatment period with chantix medication extends to about 12 weeks. http://www.chantixhome.com/
